Weather setup
Weather is a premium feature, and it stays off until you turn it on. You pick the provider, you pick how the location is worked out, and any API key stays on your device.
Turning it on.
- Unlock premium, if you have not already.
Weather is one of the four premium features. Everything else on this page applies once it is unlocked.
- Open Settings in Whittle.
Reach it from the launcher itself rather than from Android’s system settings.
- Go to Weather.
It sits in the General group, below Focus and rules.
- Choose a provider.
Open-Meteo, WeatherAPI.com or Visual Crossing. The comparison below covers which ones need a key.
- Choose how the location is set.
Either name a city yourself, or allow approximate location so the launcher can work it out. Approximate location is only requested if you pick the automatic option.
- Add an API key if your provider needs one.
Paste it into the key field for that provider. It is stored in Whittle’s private storage and left out of exported backups.

Whittle does not supply keys on your behalf, so whichever service you choose, the account is yours. A detailed forecast is available from all three.
Open-Meteo
No key needed
The public endpoint works straight away with no registration. If you hold an Open-Meteo customer key, you can enter it to use the customer endpoint instead.

API key required
Create an account with WeatherAPI.com, generate a key, and paste it into Whittle’s weather settings.
Visual Crossing
API key required
Create an account with Visual Crossing, generate a key, and paste it into Whittle’s weather settings.

What leaves your device
- A request goes out only when weather is enabled, and only to the provider you chose.
- It contains your chosen city, or approximate coordinates rounded to roughly one kilometre.
- The response is cached locally so the launcher is not asking constantly.
- Your API key is kept in the app’s private storage and excluded from settings exports.
- Leave weather off and the launcher makes no network requests of its own.
